Video of the Day: DIY Gas Forge
Building a forge ( a forge is a critical tool for a blacksmith without it nothing would really get done), as far as forges go this one isn’t the fanciest or the most efficient perhaps but it does have a simplicity to it that is refreshing. With some refractory mix, some gas burners and some plate metal you could have a working (relatively inexpensive) forge in a short period of time. This isn’t for smelting a forge is for working metal in a hot/ semi-solid state where as a foundry/smelter is for the complete melting and then casting of metal (usually using crucibles). There is a large argument over which is better forged or cast but I would rather not get into that debate now.
This video should give you a general idea of how to build a forge, you don’t have to do it the same in-fact I encourage you (if you know what you’re doing) to modify the design for aesthetics, efficiency heck maybe even to make a bigger one (although this would likely cover any requirements of a backyard blacksmith). If you’re interested in blacksmithing then building a forge is the way to go as you can save money, if you want to go right to work than maybe pick up one of these. Check out the video and add another project to your list.
